Walking in the footsteps of history…
…for a brighter future.
In October 2012, two men from Toronto will be travelling overseas to undertake a five hundred mile journey from Belfast, Northern Ireland to Edinburgh, Scotland in a bid to raise $100,000 for the fight against cancer.
Cancer is a disease that has touched our lives – and on more than one occasion. Both of the Wayfarers have been affected by the toll cancer has taken on our friends and family. We have lost loved ones to cancer, while other relatives and friends have happily survived – so the idea of tackling the disease through an epic fundraiser journey was one we couldn’t resist.
Inspired by our childhood love of medieval history and fantasy novels, we will be using only period-appropriate gear as we walk almost 27 kilometres (17 miles) a day wearing the costumes of knights, wizards, and adventurers.
The first day of the journey will be the longest, wending through part of the Emerald Isle and onto the ferry to Scotland that will lead to the next stage of our route. The rest of the trip will be made entirely on foot and without modern equipment or amenities of any kind – no propane stoves, no GPS units, no lighters, no modern lightweight tents, no flashlights, no ergonomic backpacks.
Without luxuries or creature comforts, we’ll travel through Glasgow, then camp beside the famous waters of Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. We’ll pause to visit two battle sites of medieval fame, Culloden Moor and Stirling, as well as Rosslyn Chapel, the church rumoured to have been built by the Knights Templar. Finally, the journey will end at Edinburgh Castle after four weeks of hard walking.
Wayfarers Donations and Fundraising
Wayfarers donations support three main charities: the Canadian Cancer Society, the American Cancer Society and the UK-based Association for International Cancer Research. To donate toward the Wayfarers’ goal, click here.
We know that our goal – $100,000 in worldwide donations – won’t be easy to reach. That’s why we’re committed to doing active fundraising in Toronto and across North America in the months leading up to our departure – starting now. We’ve already raised over $15,000 and we’re gearing up for a lot more!
We’re open to your ideas for new and exciting fundraising initiatives to support our goal. Contact us here with any suggestions – we’d love to hear from you.
Donating to the Wayfarers’ cause is easy and secure. All online donations are collected through secure charity websites (see our donations page for details) and 100% of the funds go directly to the charity of your choice. Absolutely none of the donated money will be going to the Wayfarers for their trip. While we are happy to accept help and “in-kind” donations towards the trip or the cause, we will not be taking any percentage of the donation money.
